Set in a trench on the battlefields of the Great War of 1918, Over the Top juxtaposes the harsh realities experienced by the soldiers of this war with their supposed patriotism and dedication to King and Country. The audience experience sarcastic interactions between British and Irish soldiers, fighting side by side in the trenches, as they reflect on the loved ones they have left behind “to fight this war of fools".  As the reality of what is to come intensifies, we are given an insight to the combatant’s real convictions enveloped by the utter futility and banality of war.
